Can cause scratches July 22, 2010 ZeroCool (Si Valley, CA) This is going to a brief review. I tried clay bars after reading all the rave reviews on them. I think that claying helps with removing a good amount of the contaminants lodged on the surface and gives it a smoother finish that can be felt with the hand which will bring a smile to your face.
On the other hand these contaminants transferred to the clay or in the paint cause scratches even when using a generous amount of the lubricant and rubbing carefully. I have frequently noticed new scratches just after I clayed my car. This did not bring a smile to my face. I had to spend extra time and effort polishing and waxing to get rid of these new scratches. I followed the exact instructions posted on the product but was not able to avoid these scratches.
I think that either the directions and usage conditions need to be specified with more exactness OR the whole idea of claying is flawed.
Good product for the $ July 19, 2010 jdog350 Other than the fact it comes with nothing to store the clay in after use my only complaint is I dont like the smell of the Shotime QD. Did a good job though.
Works well, but smells like cinnamon (unfortunately) June 28, 2010 RSRCHB4UBY (CA USA) I used Mothers California Gold Clay Bar to clean my car's paint before using DA polisher. I washed my car two times and then used Mother's clay bar. Even after two washes, when I ran my hand on the paint to feel the surface before and after claying I could feel the difference. After claying the paint was appreciably smoother.
The application was very easy - just spray the included solution and slide the bar on the paint, knead the clay when it smudges appear. The box warns that if the bar is dropped it has to be discarded, so I was mindful of not dropping it and I did not. It was quite easy to hold and use.
The only thing I did not like about this product is that the solution smelled like cinnamon. I am not a fan of cinnamon and that smell is unpleasant to me.
Overall, this is a great product.
Gets EVERYTHING June 22, 2010 M. Lee (San Francisco) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Who doesn't love a clean car? I used the Maguiar's 3 Phase car wax for the longest time. I spend 2 hours using the cleaner wax trying to get the car clean. Then I use the polish and the finally top it off with a layer of protective wax. That's roughly 6 hours start to finish and the car is glass smooth.... or so I thought.
A buddy of mine came over and brought his Mother's clay bar kit over and went right to my sore spot... you know the rear of the car where the bumper/trunk is? Any flat surface back there gets little sand like particles embedded into the paint. I cleaned for hours and I couldn't get it all out. In about 1/2 hour, he used the clay bar and got 99% of it out. I was so surprised. I ran my fingers over the paint and I swear it was smoother than that 3 hour wax job I did!
So with that, I purchased this kit myself and I've been amazed. I clayed my car and then quickly follow it with the Maguiar's NXT 2.0 wax. My car feels new and I'm super happy. If I had anything to complain about (and trust me it's not much of a complaint) I would say:
1) The clay bars should come with a plastic bag to keep them moist when you're done. Easily fixed by using a Ziplock sandwich bag.
2) The bottle of detailer is not nearly enough. I would even venture to say one clay bar will even outlast one bottle.
3) Invent a clay wand? On the Rav4, there's one small area which is IMPOSSIBLE to get your hand and a bar into to clean.
4) I'm not a fan of quick detailer spray. Go buy yourself some real wax.
good stuff June 13, 2010 Michael J. Paris (PHX) I found this product to be good. I tore through the bottle of instant detail that you are to use as lubricant. Might need a extra bottle to do a truck. I wonder if soapy water would work just as well. You can really tell the difference in smoothness. I will probably use the clay during my washing of the car with the soapy water when I am going to put on a coat a wax afterward. So, my thinking is to wash car to get heavy stuff off, then clean soapy water with the clay bar over the surface to smooth it out, then wax with Mothers Syn Wax using the Powerball and finish off with instant detailer where needed. Overall, I use all Mothers products. Yeah they are kinda pricey but I try to use a little at a time to make it last. As far as hand rubbing goes the Syn Wax is worth it as far as saving on elbow grease.
